Dollar Spot fungus is appearing in many West Georgia lawns this 2025 season, and without prompt treatment, it can spread rapidly and severely damage your turf. The disease begins as small, honey-colored circles roughly the size of a silver dollar and, if untreated, forms larger brown patches.
Dollar Spot typically emerges when nighttime temperatures exceed 65°F, and turf remains wet from high humidity or afternoon showers. It affects lawns regardless of fertility levels and spreads quickly, merging into large “melted-out” areas. Severe cases can cause damage so extensive that turf replacement may be necessary.

The mycelium, the fungus’s vegetative part, looks like thread-like webbing in active areas during heavy dew. Dollar Spot is most severe on lawns with frequent summer irrigation. To help prevent it, water your turf early in the morning while dew is present, and avoid daytime watering.
The disease can also develop on non-irrigated lawns during prolonged humid summer weather. The causal fungus spreads through mycelium on infected plant parts, like grass clippings. Mycelium can travel via wind, water, shoes, or lawn equipment, making it highly contagious.
Controlling Dollar Spot usually requires curative fungicide applications. Both contact and penetrant fungicides are effective against this disease. We recommend checking your lawn regularly for early signs of Dollar Spot and contacting us promptly if you spot symptoms.
